The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released the site location for the Bakersfield California Temple and the exterior rendering of the Cleveland Ohio Temple.
The Bakersfield and Cleveland temples are among the 50 new houses of the Lord identified by President Russell M. Nelson in the past 16 months.
The site and rendering were released Tuesday, July 25, on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
Bakersfield California Temple
President Nelson announced a temple for Bakersfield, California, at the conclusion of the April 2023 general conference, less than four months ago.
Projected to be a single-story building of approximately 30,000 square feet, the temple is planned for a 13.07-acre site at the northwest corner of the intersection of Stockdale Highway and Jewetta Avenue in Bakersfield. The site will also feature a distribution center and new meetinghouse.
California is home to nearly 730,000 Latter-day Saints in more than 1,130 congregations and a total of 12 temples that are dedicated, under construction or in planning.
Other houses of the Lord in the state include the operating Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, Fresno, Redlands, Newport Beach and Sacramento temples, with the Feather River California Temple scheduled for dedication by Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on Oct. 8, 2023.
The Yorba Linda California Temple is under construction and will be soon joined by the Modesto California Temple, with its Oct. 7 groundbreaking announced a week before the Bakersfield site. Two additional houses of the Lord were announced for California — for San Jose along with Bakersfield — as part of the 15 new temple locations identified by President Nelson in April 2023 general conference.
Cleveland Ohio Temple
Projected to be a single-story building of approximately 9,900 square feet, the Cleveland Ohio Temple will be built at Brecksville Road, south of Longano Drive, in Independence, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
The site location map was released Dec. 19, 2022.
President Russell M. Nelson announced a temple for Cleveland in April 2022 general conference.
Ohio is home to more than 63,000 Church members in more than 120 congregations. The temple in Cleveland will be the state’s second operating temple; the Columbus Ohio Temple was rededicated on June 4, 2023, after an extensive renovation.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built its first temple in Kirtland; it is owned today by the Community of Christ.
